I just finished reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson and it was fantastic. It is the first book in a set of three called the Millennium Trilogy and it actually had a few storylines running through this 600 page brick of a book. It was written by a Swedish author who sadly died before he could see the huge international success of his books and the future movies that have been made from his stories.
The Main Characters of this Book
The main female character is called Lisbeth Salander who is an anorexic looking twig of a woman who is incredibly intelligent but hides her skills well because she doesn’t want to attract attention to herself.
The main male character is called Mikael Blomkvist. He is a reporter and part owner of a political magazine called Millennium but he as been sentenced to jail for libel against a power businessman.
These two individuals are brought together because Mikael is hired by the head of a rich family to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his niece some 40 years ago.
The Various Themes
As well as the storyline that runs through the book, there are several themes that are intertwined in the lives of the individuals featured.
These include financial corruption, violence, rape, incest, murder, religion and complicated relationships. This is a lot to cover so it is not surprising that there are over 600 pages.
The Reason Why This Is a Great Read
I have to admit that it took 50 pages before I really got into the story. If my friend hadn’t recommended this novel to me and assured me that it was really good, I would have given up long ago. I think that maybe because the author was Swedish, everything is a little bit slower so he took his time to actually get to the point of the story. This is sure to put a lot of people off but I am glad that I persevered.
Watch The Movie The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Due to the huge success of this book, a Swedish language movie was made in 2009 featuring Swedish actress Noomi Rapace. In 2011 An American version of this film was made featuring actor Daniel Craig as the reporter and actress Rooney Mara.
I have watched the Swedish version and thought that it was fantastic. I am now looking forward to seeing what the differences are between this one and the new blockbuster version.
The Other Books in The Millennium Trilogy
I am now ready to move on to the second book in the trilogy, which is called The Girl Who Played With Fire and then I will read the final instalment called The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest.
