I watched the film 50/50 starring the gorgeous Joseph Gordon-Levitt (best known for comedy series 3rd Rock from the Sun) and the not so gorgeous Seth Rogen (sorry). This film was billed as a comedy but I would say that it is more of a drama with funny bits in it. I would definitely recommend this, especially as it deals with the difficult topic of cancer in a unique way.
This film was written by Seth’s best friend Will Reiser and is based on his own true life story. The main character in the film is called Adam, played by Joseph and he finds out that he has cancer of the spine. The story explores how different people react to the news, including his parents, his girlfriend, his best friend and his work colleagues.
This film features Angela Houston as the mother, Bryce Dallas Howard (also in The Help) as the girlfriend and Anna Kendrick (from the The Twilight Saga movies) as a trainee therapist.
Is It Worth Seeing 50/50?
I found it truly fascinating to watch the different reactions because I have friends and family members who have battled cancer and it is hard to know what to say or how you should act when you know that their situation could be life threatening.
Other Films about Cancer
There have been several films produced that have dealt with cancer such as:
- Terms of Endearment starring Jack Nicholson and Shirley MacLaine (1983)
- Dying Young starring Julia Roberts and Campell Scott (1991)
- Stepmom starring Julia Roberts and Susan Sarrandon (1998)
- My Sister’s Keeper starring Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin (2009)
- The Bucket List also starring Jack Nicholson with Morgan Freeman (2007)
We were in need of a new film version for the 21st century and 50/50 is a great interpretation of this subject matter. This is certainly not a first date kind of movie but it is definitely worth watching.
